S.D. Professionals, LLC Digital Marketing Coordinator shares his stories from his East Knoxville home during the “safer-at-home” time.

Victor King settles in at his family home for a familiar place he didn’t even realize he was missing.

A Note From Victor

If you’re familiar with “The Godfather,” a family favorite in the King house, a consistent theme throughout the series is “family!” While we’re no fictional crime family, family centricity is an element that almost defines our household. And when I graduated from high school, I sought to pave my own way.

After graduating spring 2010, I decided to pursue college out of state and transferred to East Tennessee State University in the fall of 2011. And Johnson City, TN would become my home for the next eight years. Having established myself in Johnson City, TN the hour and forty-five-minute drive began to feel more like five hours and my travel home lessened to holidays and certain special occasions.

While working for my alma mater, I began looking for opportunities that would allow me to continue developing my professional skills. In addition to my professional development, I wanted to regain the family connection I missed. Accepting the Digital Marketing Coordinator position at SD Pros not only aligned with my professional goals, it also met my personal desire.

Return To Family Home, Turned Home Office

The transition from leaving the nest to returning was very similar to Jay-Z’s “Encore.” In the same way Jay-Z thought he was retiring from rap, I thought I would leave Knoxville for good. And just like Hov, I returned and immediately realized why I missed home so much.

Reconnecting with family, friends and settling into my new routine came to a screeching halt with COVID-19 concerns rising. As our office made a swift transition to working remotely, so did my mother’s office. And the King residence became a fully operational home office

In an effort to stay close to my normal work schedule, I get up at the same time that I normally would to make my thirty-five-minute drive to the office. I try to stay pretty consistent with my normal snack and lunchtime and I quickly discovered, when working at home with both of your parents, things are far from normal.

After mob movies, music and food are two things you’re guaranteed to find in the King household. Each morning, my father starts his day with a cup of coffee and the sweet aroma fills the house. Shortly after, the sound of the Steve Harvey Morning Show plays from his stereo. And our day begins!

My father cooks a quick breakfast for my mother and I before he’s off to work. I head to my desk and here’s where things get a little tricky. As I mentioned before, family centrism is an element that almost defines my family and my parents’ house is the hub!

With visits from my siblings and their children to our family dog hopping in your lap at any given time, there is a constant feeling of togetherness. Togetherness was the feeling I missed the most, and Bill Lee’s “Safer At Home” order has allowed me to catch up with my family. My family has taken this time and made the most of it by getting through it together.

From celebrating birthdays by the firepit and roasting marshmallows, to sharing memories made to our favorite music, our family has taken this time to be together. While there is a “Stay At Home” order we still find time to share meals and find comfort in knowing better days are ahead. With the madness of the ever opening door and dog barks, we still find peace and a way to work in our new norm.

Like Jay Z’s “Encore,” I’m back even after I thought I was gone for good. These are the things that brought me back home. This is my “Encore” and I’m so happy to be back!
