Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches“?
Unique Marketing Videos on YouTube
Ever heard of Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches YouTube video? We hadn’t either until a friend posted it on Facebook. The concept is brilliant. An artist sketches the face of women as they describe themselves and then again as they are being described by strangers. The key thing here? The artist never sees the women’s faces.
The video was very well produced and we were just about to share it and spread the word to our friends that they too should watch this beautiful piece but then we scrolled to the comments.
One viewer, lolzgym, wrote:
“Just a friendly reminder that Dove’s parent company, Unilever, makes Axe products. *cough*hypocrites*cough*.“
Could it be true we asked? Could it be true that the same people that made such a touching, well-produced piece promoting the inner beauty of women is also the same company that produces a product that some might say degrades women in order to attract its mostly male customers?
In fact, that viewer was absolutely correct. Have a look for yourself here on Unilever.com. One quick search for AXE commercials on YouTube and you’ll find “The AXE Effect Bar Dance” where AXE tells you that although they can’t help with your dancing, they can “Help you with the girls”.
Then there’s the fake press conference where AXE “officials” are taking questions from a fake audience of reporters, etc. All questions about cleaning your balls of course.
As an online marketing company, we can definitely appreciate unique marketing techniques and these fit the bill for sure but at the same time, we must admit, the “Dove” video would have meant so much more had we never seen the comment and just went on about our business of surfing YouTube (while at work)!
Speaking of surfing YouTube while at work, if you still have time for a laugh, you really should watch K-marts “Ship My Pants” video. We think it is absolutely brilliant. Check it out below:
